Five Ways to Completely Change the Outside of Your Home

It happens to pretty much all homeowners at some point – you pull into your driveway, and you suddenly realize that you’re tired of the way your home looks. You want to change it up, but you’re just not sure how. If this sounds like you – or you’re looking to sell your home soon and you want to improve the curb appeal – here are five ideas to get you started on completely changing the outside of your home.

Change the Color

The most obvious solution for changing the look of your home is to change the color. The color of your home is the most significant aspect of its look, and therefore changing it provides the biggest possibility for a new look. Depending on what is on the outside of your home, you may have the option to repaint the home a new color, or to change the aluminum siding. Once you’ve decided that you want to change the color, take some time to carefully pick through all of your options. It’s amazing the difference a can of paint can make on a home, and you want the change to be a good one.

Replace the Roof

Besides the color of the home itself, you can also change the roof. There may come a time when you need to replace your roof because of damage or wear, but you can also change the roof if you just want a different look for your home. Not only can you change the color of the roof, but you can also change the material. For instance, you could look into getting metal roofing, which not only changes up the color, but also provides some other benefits. Changing the roof is a big deal, so be sure the cost is worth the effort, and perhaps save this project until your roof is in need of repairs anyway.

Improve the Landscape

Moving away from the home, we have the landscape surrounding it. There are several ways you can alter or improve the landscape around your home, and each one would alter the way your home looks. For instance, you could plant more trees, shrubs or bushes, giving your home a greener look or some additional shade. You could also add walls around the edges of your lawn, work on improving the grass, or remove some trees from your property. Depending on how big of a project you have in mind, you may be able to do all of the work on your own, but in many instances you’ll want to get the advice and help from a local landscaping professional.

Redo the Sidewalks or Driveway

Over time, the sidewalks and driveway of your home might become worn down, cracked, or faded. This happens as a result of harsh weather, the ground shifting underneath, and sunlight hitting the surface. You might not notice these effects, as they happen gradually, but when you have your sidewalk or driveway redone, the difference is amazing. Think about whether or not your driveway could use a repaving, or if your walkways could use a different look. Doing so is typically a straightforward job, but one that provides a large impact on the visual appeal of your home.

Change the Lighting

Finally, during the day is not the only time you can see your home. If you want to change up the look of your home at night, you’ll want to play around with the lighting. There are plenty of lighting options available to you – such as adding more lights, using different colors, or changing the position of your current lights. Think about what aspects of your home you want to accentuate, or simply which areas could use a little more light at night (such as the driveway or sidewalk). Adding lighting is an easy job, but you may need the help of an electrician to ensure the job gets done properly. If you want some outdoor lighting ideas to see what’s possible, here are a few to get you started.

Don’t Settle for a Boring Home

You’ve worked hard to own a home, so don’t settle for living in something that bores you. There are a lot of easy ways to improve the outside of your home, and many of them don’t require that you break the bank. The above list is a great place to start your search, but there are many other ideas out there. So take some time to explore your options, and to think about what you really want to do to completely change the outside of your home.
